The University of Rochester Medical Center (URMC) recognized that BMI reporting was essential to patient care, but using paper copy was proving to be ineffective. For URMC, an Allscripts Enterprise EHR v10 client, no BMI reporting solution was readily available in Enterprise EHR so they requested help from EHR Integration Services.
Client: University of Rochester Medical Center (URMC)
Project: Implementation of BMI (Body Mass Index) Reporting add-on solution for Allscripts Enterprise EHR (Fall, 2009)
Client Business Need and Background:
New York State has a mandate to identify children who are obese or at risk. With the incidence of obese and at risk children increasing at an alarming rate, URMC is taking an active role in a community-wide initiative focused on the health and future health of obese children.
Having a large pediatric division, URMC recognized that BMI reporting was essential to patient care, but using a paper copy was proving to be ineffective. The BMI information was not always readily available to the clinicians and was difficult to administer in the EMR workflow. Hence it was not done and children did not get the needed medical intervention. For URMC, an Allscripts Enterprise EHR (v10) client, there was no BMI Reporting solution readily available in Enterprise EHR so they requested help from EHR Integration Services.
How EHR helped:
EHR created a custom BMI reporting module that integrates directly into the Enterprise EHR workflow. The BMI data is gathered for the selected patient and the BMI report is created in real time so the clinician has an up to the minute view of the patient’s situation.
Significant Results/Impact as a result of this project:
- Increased state compliance with the identification of obese children
- No longer require access to a paper copy of curve; improved workflow
- Improved identification of at risk/obese children leads to additional screening (diabetes, hyperlipidemia, hypertension), and education and intervention services for these obese children
Client Comment:
“Thanks to EHR Integration Services' BMI Reporting add-on, we are improving the health care of children in the URMC [Rochester, NY] community.” Amy Garcia, URMC
